Global power generation specialist HIMOINSA is strengthening its position as a turnkey power solutions provider to the mining and broader industrial sectors across Southern and East Africa, combining international manufacturing expertise with local technical capability and after-sales support.
HIMOINSA operations head Dean Schmelzer and critical application sales manager David Liao spoke to Engineering News & Mining Weekly during the Electra Mining Africa event, held in Johannesburg from September 7 to 11, 2026.
Established in 1982 and part of the YANMAR Group since 2015, HIMOINSA has more than four decades of experience in the design, manufacture and supply of power generation equipment. Its portfolio includes generator sets, lighting towers, energy storage and distribution systems, with solutions designed for applications ranging from construction and mining to data centres, telecommunications and critical infrastructure.
For HIMOINSA Southern Africa, the focus is on translating this global product capability into solutions suited to the specific requirements of customers operating in the region.
Established in 2016, HIMOINSA Southern Africa has enjoyed sustained growth and is headquartered in Gqeberha, with regional sales and service centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The Southern African operation is also unique within the HIMOINSA global network in offering rental solutions alongside direct equipment sales, local technical support and after-sales maintenance.
This enables customers to access short- and long-term rental solutions, including build-operate-transfer (BOOT) arrangements, supported by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
Flexibility is a central feature of the offering, with HIMOINSA Southern Africa providing scalable technology, commercial and financing solutions, as well as flexible contract terms.
The company supplies diesel and gas generator sets, lighting towers, auxiliaries and consumables, while also supporting customers as the energy landscape evolves towards hybrid solutions.
HIMOINSA’s experience in hybrid applications allows it to combine thermal generation with energy storage and other technologies, creating bespoke solutions according to individual site requirements.
For mining operations, where reliability, mobility and continuous power availability are critical, HIMOINSA equipment is designed to operate in demanding environments and support 24/7 applications.
The company’s vertically integrated manufacturing approach also supports quality control, with generator sets tested at the factory before delivery. Components from leading international brands are incorporated where they strengthen overall system performance.
Locally available OEM-qualified technical expertise, spare parts and stock further strengthen the Southern African proposition. HIMOINSA’s bonded facility in Gqeberha and network of technical partners across the region enable the company to provide responsive support to customers.
As African mining operations increasingly seek reliable, flexible and more efficient power solutions, HIMOINSA Southern Africa is positioning itself not simply as an equipment supplier, but as a long-term OEM partner capable of supporting customers from power generation and rental through to technical support and evolving hybrid energy requirements.
