Northern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) subsidiary Black Mountain Mining (BBM). VZI is the Southern African zinc business of Vedanta Limited. 

Project Description
Phase II of the Gamsberg expansion adds a second concentrator, increasing combined Phase I and II ore-processing capacity to about eight-million tonnes a year. The expansion adds about 250 000 t/y of zinc-in-concentrate capacity, taking total Gamsberg capacity to about 500 000 t/y. 

Gamsberg has mineral reserves and resources of about 655-million tonnes of ore containing about 34.3-million tonnes of metal. About 28% of this is classed as reserves.

Gamsberg has an estimated life-of-mine of about 30 years. 

Potential Job Creation
More than 1 500 people worked on Phase II at the peak of construction. The expansion is expected to create about 800 to 1 000 jobs during operations.

Capital Expenditure
About R10-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The expansion project was approved in the fourth quarter of the 2021/22 financial year. 

Phase II was completed on July 15, 2026. 

Latest Developments
President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened the Phase II expansion on October 16, 2026.

Onshore (engineering, procurement and construction partner); TCE (owner’s engineers); M&D (construction partner); WBHO (tailings storage facility); Afriline (external water system); PPE (external power system); and CITIC Heavy Industries (ball and semiautogenous grinding mills).
