Three train sets, each comprising six coaches, of South Africa-based black-empowered train manufacturer Gibela’s R51-billion new build project for State-owned Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa have passed through the fitting line at French rail solutions original-equipment manufacturer Alstom’s Lapa manufacturing plant, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Alstom, which is manufacturing the first 20 passenger trains on behalf of Gibela, started testing the first complete train set in June.

Gibela tells Engineering News that the first train was completed under the “scope of a test train” and is on schedule for its November delivery.

Static tests on the passenger trains are under way in Brazil, Gibela highlights, adding that a significant portion of the mechanical tests has been concluded and that the company is proceeding to functional testing.

Dynamic testing, which also involves speed tests, will be conducted in South Africa from December 2015 to June 2016.
