As an exhibitor at this year’s Electra Mining Africa (EMA) exhibition, being held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, from September 7 to September 11, weighing equipment solutions supplier Autotech Weighing Systems aims to highlight its newest offering under Finnish manufacturer Tamtron’s flag.

The Tamtron Excavator Scale, introduced to the South African bulk materials handling market in June 2025, has been developed to improve weighing accuracy, speed and user-friendliness.

“It combines the latest smart technology with decades of weighing expertise,” says Autotech Weighing engineer Craig Loffell.

The Excavator Scale system autonomously measures product weight during standard loading operations without necessitating operational interruption or deceleration.

It supports up to 20 distinct bucket profiles; the operator selects the active profile via the display interface, prompting the system to automatically calibrate and execute the appropriate weighing parameters.

All measurement data are transmitted and stored within the Tamtron Cloud platform, where they can be categorised by site, project, or contract parameters. This integration minimizes manual data entry, accelerates invoicing procedures, and facilitates transparent, traceable reporting.

Tamtron’s Excavator Scale is designed for earthmoving, construction and circular economy applications where weighing takes place while working with a bucket.

The solution weighs loads automatically, enabling weighing during loading, transport and unloading of material, without stopping at an external scale.

applications where the Excavator Scale may be used include across the mining and quarrying sector, in the production and storage of earth materials, for mass transfer and earthworks as well as material logistics at construction sites.

Loffell says the system provides precise weighing results with an error margin or relative standard deviation of less than 2%, ensuring accurate loading and consistent quality in all conditions.

Weighing is performed automatically during normal loading, eliminating unnecessary stops and improving workflow efficiency, and orders can also be sent directly to the scale, streamlining operations and reducing manual work, he adds.

Weighing data is transferred to the Tamtron Cloud service in real time, enabling up-to-date worksite management, reporting, and invoicing.

The system is compatible with all excavator brands and can be easily integrated into existing systems and processes.

Weighing the Options

Autotech Weighing Systems is the sole Southern African agent and supplier of Railweight’s train weighing systems in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, which will also be on display at this year’s EMA.

Railweight, a part of global industrial weighing systems manufacturer Avery Weigh-Tronix group, offers advanced weighing systems that provide a comprehensive, accurate, and cost-effective way to measure the weight of high-speed trains.

“This advanced technology allows for more efficient operations, improved safety, and better control of operational costs,” says Loffell.

Railweight’s train weighing systems provide a wealth of data that can be used to inform decision-making. Data can be used to analyse the weight of trains, determine the amount of cargo being transported, and track the health of the railway system.

This data can be used to make informed decisions about the performance, maintenance, and safety of the rail network, as well as providing valuable insights into the cost-effectiveness of operations.

Loffell stresses that weighing is essential for cost control and safety in rail operations, from tracking product shipments to avoiding overloading penalties.

Accurately calculating the weight of wagons helps ensure users charge their clients the correct amount for the products shipped, consequently not losing money or overcharging.

The technologies also prevent overloading, which can damage the wagons and tracks, while avoiding uneven loading that might cause train derailments.

“Weighing the wagons can also help spot leaks or theft of materials.”

The solution enables adjustment of loading amounts during bulk shipments to maximise the amount of product moved without exceeding safe limits.

“This helps in controlling production processes better, like charging furnaces for ironmaking, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently,” concludes Loffell.
