EGA restarts quarter of reduction cells at Al Taweelah smelter
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) said on Wednesday it had brought a quarter of its Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi back online as the company works to recover from damage caused by an Iranian attack in March.
The company said 315 of the smelter's 1 262 reduction cells were now back online after the attack on the Khalifa Economic Zone forced an emergency shutdown of all EGA facilities at the site.
EGA is gradually restarting the roughly 1.5-million tons a year Al Taweelah smelter while carrying out repairs and is working on all three production lines to speed up the recovery. The lines were re-energised between May and August, EGA said.
Around 1 000 people are involved in restoring production at Al Taweelah, EGA said. CE Abdulnasser Bin Kalban reiterated that the company remained on track to restore full production in the first quarter of 2027.
The company added that the refinery continued to operate at about 50% capacity, while output at its new recycling plant was increasing as planned, with full output expected by the final quarter of the year.
"The pace of further ramp-up of alumina production will be determined by supply chain considerations and the optimisation of EGA's alumina sourcing strategy," EGA said.
