Gauteng recommits to development of jewellery manufacturing hub
Construction on the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency’s (GGDA’s) Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct, to be established within the OR Tambo industrial development zone (IDZ), was expected to start before the end of the current financial year on March 31, 2015.
According to a presentation by a staff member of the GGDA at an event co-hosted by the GGDA and the French-South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the facility should be commissioned within three years thereafter.
“All the prework has been done in terms of conceptualisation, declaring the IDZ and linking up with the national government for support in terms of infrastructure,” the GGDA said.
The staff member added that, while the precinct would start out with jewellery manufacturing, it would eventually include other projects, such as producing components for the information and communication technology sector and watchmaking.
The precinct would assist in executing govern-ment policy on local content beneficiation and skills development.
The Gauteng provincial government last year launched a training programme aimed at bolstering jewellery manufacturing and design in the province. This would link with the Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct.
“As part of the value-chain unlocking, we looked at the skills component that would be needed at the centre. “We started with a sample of about 15 students in jewellery design, and [they] have been trained and skilled so that when the centre opens, we will have skilled employees to immediately take advantage of the centre,” the GGDA staff member explained.
