The Competition Commission has given its approval for the proposed acquisition by GHN Resources of the Goedehoop North Colliery, in Mpumalanga, from Thungela Resources subsidiary Thungela Operations.

GHN Resources mines and markets coal produced at the Black Wattle opencast thermal coal mine, in Mpumalanga, and processed at its Sisonke Coal coal handling and processing facility.

Goedehoop North Colliery has been non-operational since December 2025 and was historically an export-focused coal mine, primarily producing thermal coal for export, with some volumes of coal sold into the domestic market, primarily being discard product.

The commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any relevant market and says it also does not raise public interest concerns.
