Canada's Vortex buys salt prospect for energy storage potential in Saskatchewan
Canada-listed Vortex Energy has entered into an asset purchase agreement to acquire the Meadows project, in Saskatchewan, from Global Strategic Minerals Corporation for C$255 000.
The Meadows project spans 21 600 ha across 338 Crown parcels near the Alberta border. Regional evidence provides an encouraging basis to explore the project for salt, with potential applications for compressed air energy storage and hydrogen storage.
Vortex is advancing another salt project called Robinson River in Newfoundland & Labrador, which is prospective both for salt and hydrogen salt cavern storage, as well as the Fire Eye uranium project in the Athabasca basin.
For context, the global compressed air energy storage market size was estimated at $7.8-billion in 2025, and projected to grow to $38-billion by 2034 - at a compound yearly growth rate of 18.7%.
Compressed air energy storage uses electricity to compress air for storage in a confined space, including suitably designed underground caverns. When electricity is required, the compressed air is released and expanded through generation equipment to produce power.
Increasing deployment of intermittent wind and solar generation is creating demand for these long-duration storage solutions that can help balance electricity supply and demand, as well as support grid reliability.
