Water utility company Rand Water last month met with representatives of the Democratic Alliance (DA), led by DA MP Stephen Moore, as well as a small delegation of other public representatives from municipalities supplied by Rand Water, as part of ongoing engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation, transparency and shared understanding across institutions involved in the water supply value chain.

The engagement focused on key operational aspects of Rand Water’s bulk water supply system and provided an opportunity for the DA delegation to receive a comprehensive briefing on the organisation’s infrastructure, regulatory framework and operational processes.

The discussion formed part of efforts to support constructive dialogue on the challenges and responsibilities associated with ensuring sustainable and reliable water supply to municipalities.

During the meeting, Rand Water provided an overview of its core systems and operational structures, outlining how bulk water is abstracted, treated and distributed to municipalities within its areas of supply.

Rand Water executives, led by Rand Water chairperson Ramateu Monyokolo and supported by Group CEO Sipho Mosai, explained the regulatory framework governing the utility’s operations, including the conditions attached to its abstraction licence and its obligations regarding water resource management and environmental compliance.

Attention was given to the operational capacity and role of the Zuikerbosch and Vereeniging water treatment plants, which are central to Rand Water’s treatment and pumping operations.

The discussion further explored the technical and operational constraints that affect the bulk water system, including infrastructure limitations, demand fluctuations and the need for continuous operational balancing across the supply network.

The Rand Water executives outlined how these factors are managed to maintain system stability and ensure that municipalities receive water in accordance with the contractual obligations.

In addition, the meeting addressed the broader water value chain and the distinct roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders. The purpose of the engagement was to facilitate an informed exchange of views and to ensure

that discussions regarding water supply challenges were grounded in a “clear and comprehensive” understanding of Rand Water’s operational environment.

Both parties acknowledged the importance of collaborative engagement among national entities, bulk water utilities and municipalities in addressing the pressures facing water infrastructure and service delivery.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to ongoing dialogue and cooperation.
