Full Name: Bongani Hilton Khumalo

Position and Company Name: GM: business development and integration at bp Southern Africa

Main Activity of the Company: Downstream petroleum and energy solutions, including fuels marketing, logistics and strategic energy transition initiatives

Date and Place of Birth: April 1, 1975, Umlazi, Durban

Schools and Tertiary Education: My academic journey began at Nyanisweni LP School and continued at KwaShaka High School. I earned my tertiary qualifications from Mangosuthu University of Technology and Durban University of Technology, focusing on business-related disciplines within chemical engineering and finance

First Job: In-service trainee at the Engen refinery in Durban Wentworth

Size of First Pay Packet: Although modest by today’s standards, it played a significant role in shaping my strong work ethic and commercial discipline

Career Path to Date: My career in the energy sector has progressed from engineering and operations roles at Engen to strategic and executive leadership at bp Southern Africa. My experience spans commercial operations, strategic planning, integration and regulatory affairs, including international exposure as an IST commercial strategy adviser in the UK. In my current position, I lead business development activities, oversee complex asset and joint venture integration, and contribute to key strategic transformation projects

Value of Assets under Your Management: I oversee assets valued in the multibillion-rand range, including fuel infrastructure, commercial operations, and strategic partnerships

Number of People under Your Leadership: A multidisciplinary team of nine people

Management Style: Collaborative, outcomesdriven, and grounded in accountability

Personal Best Achievement: Leading and integrating complex, highstakes business initiatives that deliver longterm value while navigating regulatory, commercial and stakeholder complexity

Person Who Has Had the Biggest Influence on Your Life: My father greatly shaped my entrepreneurial skills, leadership resilience and capacity to collaborate towards achieving objectives, while life lessons from community members while growing up in Umlazi also influenced my growth

Person Who Has Had the Biggest Influence on Your Career: The late Gerard Derbesy, bp Southern Africa vice president (2011-2013) enabled my overseas assignment through his vision and commitment to developing local leadership. I have also benefited from the guidance of many others, including Greame Alexandra and Ian Hogkinson

Person You Would Like to Meet: A global energy or business leader who has successfully led large-scale transition and transformation – particularly in balancing energy security, affordability and sustainability

Businessperson Who Has Impressed You Most: Prince Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a leader who combines commercial success with longterm societal impact and responsible governance

Philosophy of Life: Focus on what you can control, act with integrity, and leave every organisation stronger than you found it

Biggest Ever Opportunity: Participating in the transformation of the energy sector during a period of profound structural change

Biggest Ever Disappointment: Missed business opportunities due to timing or external constraints, despite full readiness and intent

Hope for the Future: A sustainable and inclusive energy system that supports economic growth while meeting our environmental and social responsibilities

Favourite Reading: Business strategy, leadership, biographies and current affairs

Favourite TV Programme: Current affairs, history documentaries and sport – mainly soccer

Favourite Food/Drink: African cuisine is my preferred choice. When I’m hungry, I value quality above all – I simply wish to enjoy well-prepared food

Favourite Music: A wide range of genres

Favourite Sports: Soccer and rugby

Hobbies: Reading, keeping active, and spending time with my family

Car: Practical and reliable cars. I have a deep appreciation for vintage cars

Pets: I don’t have a personal preference for pets, but my wife loves them, and I’ve grown to enjoy their company. We run a small farm where we raise livestock and cultivate crops. Over time, I’ve grown to appreciate the farm lifestyle and the responsibilities that come with it

Miscellaneous Dislikes: Complacency, inadequate execution and lack of accountability. While I value patience, I prefer things to be done with urgency, and I find it frustrating when that drive is missing

Married: To Hlengiwe Khumalo “Ndluknkulu”, for over 23 years

Children: Two daughters, Zama and Asanda
