Qatar

Qatar is a sovereign state occupying a small peninsula on the north-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East. The capital is Doha, which serves as the country's economic and political centre. Qatar has a population of approximately 2.9-million people and operates as an absolute monarchy under the Al Thani family. The country possesses one of the world's largest natural gas reserves, particularly in the offshore North Field (part of the South Pars/North Dome structure shared with Iran), which has made it the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Qatar's economy is heavily dependent on hydrocarbon exports, with LNG shipments from facilities such as Ras Laffan underpinning government revenues and driving GDP growth. The currency is the Qatari riyal, which is pegged to the US dollar. Qatar is a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) until it withdrew in 2019, and the United Nations. The country has leveraged its energy wealth to build significant sovereign investment funds and infrastructure, and has positioned itself as a key supplier of natural gas to Asia, Europe and emerging markets seeking energy security and decarbonisation alternatives to coal. Qatar gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1971 and has since developed into one of the wealthiest nations per capita globally, driven by its strategic control of vast gas resources.
