Paul Mashatile

Paul Mashatile is Deputy President of South Africa, serving under President Cyril Ramaphosa. He is a South African politician and senior member of the African National Congress (ANC). Mashatile was appointed to the deputy presidency in March 2023 following his election as ANC deputy president at the party's national conference in December 2022. His path to the position included extensive experience in provincial and national government, having served as Premier of Gauteng from 2008 to 2009 and as Minister of Arts and Culture from 2013 to 2014. He has held several other ministerial portfolios and senior ANC positions throughout his career, including treasurer-general of the party. Mashatile's political influence extends across governance, party structures and policy development, making him a key figure in South African politics. He is known for his role in ANC internal politics and coalition-building. His responsibilities as Deputy President include supporting the President in executing government programmes and representing the executive at various forums. Mashatile's career has been marked by his involvement in provincial governance, particularly in Gauteng, where he built a strong political base. He remains a prominent voice in debates on economic policy, service delivery and the country's development trajectory.
