New Zealand

New Zealand is an island nation in the south-western Pacific Ocean, comprising two main landmasses—the North Island and the South Island—and more than 700 smaller islands. The capital is Wellington, while Auckland is the largest city. The country has a population of about five-million people and operates as a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth. New Zealand's economy is advanced and market-oriented, with key sectors including agriculture, horticulture, forestry, fishing, tourism and manufacturing. The country is a major exporter of dairy products, meat, wool, wine and kiwifruit, with primary industries playing a significant role in trade. The currency is the New Zealand dollar. New Zealand is a member of regional and international organisations including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the United Nations. The nation has strong trade and investment links with Australia, China, the US and other Asia-Pacific economies. New Zealand was among the last major landmasses settled by humans, with Māori arriving from Polynesia between 1250 and 1300, followed by European contact in the seventeenth century and British colonisation from the early nineteenth century, leading to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 and full independence in the twentieth century.
