Electricity Distribution

Electricity distribution is the final stage of electricity delivery, involving the operation and maintenance of medium-voltage and low-voltage networks that carry power from transmission substations to end users. Distribution networks step down high-voltage electricity from the transmission grid to levels suitable for homes, businesses and industrial facilities, typically ranging from 11 kV to 230 V. The sector encompasses the ownership and management of distribution infrastructure including substations, transformers, overhead lines, underground cables, meters and associated equipment across urban and rural areas. Distribution companies are responsible for connecting new customers, maintaining service reliability, managing outages and ensuring power quality within their licensed service territories. Revenue is typically generated through regulated tariffs that recover the costs of network operation, maintenance, capital investment and electricity losses. In many countries, electricity distribution is separated from generation and transmission, with multiple distribution utilities serving different geographic areas under regulatory oversight. Distribution networks face growing complexity as they accommodate distributed generation from rooftop solar installations, manage bidirectional power flows and integrate smart grid technologies. In South Africa, electricity distribution is fragmented among Eskom, which serves rural and some urban areas, and numerous municipalities that operate their own distribution networks in cities and towns. The sector faces challenges including aging infrastructure, revenue collection difficulties, technical losses from theft and illegal connections, and the need for substantial investment to modernise networks and accommodate decentralised renewable energy.
