Witwatersrand Basin Project

The Witwatersrand Basin Project is a gold mining initiative located in the Witwatersrand Basin of Gauteng, South Africa. The project is operated by West Wits Mining and forms part of the company's portfolio of gold assets in the historically prolific Witwatersrand goldfields. The Witwatersrand Basin itself is one of the world's most significant gold-bearing geological formations, having produced more than 40% of all the gold ever mined globally since its discovery in the late nineteenth century. The project targets gold-bearing reef structures within the basin, which extends across a large area of Gauteng province, encompassing Johannesburg and surrounding districts. West Wits Mining's operations at the Witwatersrand Basin Project involve both underground and surface mining activities, depending on the depth and accessibility of the ore bodies. The project has attracted financing and technical support from various stakeholders, including financial institutions such as Absa Bank and development finance entities like the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa. Gold production from the Witwatersrand Basin Project contributes to South Africa's position as a major gold producer, although output from the basin has declined from historical peaks as deeper and more marginal deposits are exploited. The project remains strategically significant for regional employment and for sustaining mining infrastructure in Gauteng's gold belt.
