Wind

Wind energy is the conversion of kinetic energy from moving air into electricity using wind turbines, and it represents one of the fastest-growing segments of the global renewable-energy industry. Modern wind turbines consist of rotor blades mounted on a tower, connected to a generator that produces electrical power as the blades turn. Wind farms can be located onshore or offshore, with offshore installations typically benefiting from stronger and more consistent wind speeds. The technology has matured rapidly over recent decades, with turbine capacities increasing and costs declining, making wind competitive with conventional fossil-fuel generation in many markets. Key wind markets include Europe, North America, China and increasingly parts of Africa, where countries such as South Africa, Kenya and Morocco have commissioned utility-scale projects. Wind power is valued for its zero-emission operation, scalability and compatibility with hybrid systems that integrate solar, hydropower or battery storage. Challenges include the intermittent nature of wind resources, which requires grid flexibility and backup capacity, as well as land-use considerations and potential impacts on bird and bat populations. Advances in turbine design, forecasting and grid integration continue to enhance the role of wind in electricity generation. The sector is a major driver of investment, employment and industrial development in the transition to low-carbon energy systems.
