UN General Assembly

The UN General Assembly (United Nations General Assembly) is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. It comprises all 193 member states of the UN, each with one vote, making it the most inclusive multilateral forum in the world. The General Assembly meets annually in regular session from September to December at UN headquarters in New York, and may convene special or emergency sessions as required. It discusses and makes recommendations on a wide range of international issues, including peace and security, development, human rights, international law and the UN budget. While its resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant moral and political weight and reflect the collective will of the international community. The General Assembly elects the non-permanent members of the Security Council, appoints the Secretary-General on the recommendation of the Security Council, and admits new member states. It also coordinates the work of UN specialised agencies and programmes. The presidency of the General Assembly rotates annually among the five regional groups of member states. The General Assembly has been a platform for landmark declarations and conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It remains central to global governance and multilateral diplomacy.
