Tharisa Mine

Tharisa Mine is an opencast platinum-group metals and chrome mining operation located near Rustenburg in North West province, South Africa. The mine is owned and operated by Tharisa, a dual-listed mining company with headquarters in Johannesburg and London. Tharisa Mine exploits the Bushveld Igneous Complex, extracting both platinum-group metals and chromite from the same orebody in an integrated operation. The facility produces PGM concentrate and chrome concentrate, which are processed and sold to markets globally. The mine's dual-product model allows it to balance revenue streams across two commodity markets, providing some resilience against price volatility in either metal. Tharisa Mine is a significant employer in the Rustenburg area and contributes to the regional economy through direct employment and procurement. The operation includes mining, crushing, milling and concentration infrastructure on site. Tharisa Mine commenced production in 2013 and has since expanded its capacity and output. The mine is a key asset for Tharisa and represents one of the few large-scale integrated PGM-chrome operations in South Africa.
