Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is a framework for economic growth and social progress that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The concept integrates three interdependent pillars: economic development, social inclusion and environmental protection. It emerged as a global policy paradigm following the 1987 Brundtland Commission report and was reinforced at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. The United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, covering poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice. In business and regulatory contexts, sustainable development principles guide corporate environmental, social and governance strategies, resource management, and impact assessment processes. Governments worldwide have embedded the framework into legislation, planning and permitting regimes, particularly in sectors such as mining, energy, forestry and infrastructure. In South Africa, sustainable development underpins environmental law, including the National Environmental Management Act, and informs departmental mandates across natural resources and economic development portfolios. The framework requires balancing economic imperatives with ecological limits and social equity, often through integrated planning, stakeholder engagement and adaptive management. Sustainable development remains central to international climate agreements, biodiversity conventions and development finance.
