South African Rand

The South African Rand is the official currency of South Africa, designated by the ISO code ZAR and symbol R. It is issued by the South African Reserve Bank, the country's central bank. The rand is a free-floating currency, with its value determined by market forces in the foreign exchange market. It serves as legal tender not only in South Africa but also in the Common Monetary Area, which includes Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia, though the latter three countries also issue their own currencies pegged at par to the rand. The currency plays a central role in regional trade and is widely used in southern African commerce. The rand is subdivided into 100 cents. It was introduced on 14 February 1961, replacing the South African pound at a rate of two rand to one pound, coinciding with South Africa's transition to a decimal currency system. The rand's exchange rate is closely watched by investors and traders as an indicator of South African economic health and emerging-market sentiment. It is considered one of the most actively traded emerging-market currencies globally. The rand's value is influenced by commodity prices, particularly gold and platinum, as South Africa is a major producer of these metals, as well as by domestic economic indicators, political developments and global risk appetite.
