Sherritt International

Sherritt International is a Canadian natural resources company specialising in the mining and refining of nickel and cobalt. The company is headquartered in Toronto, Canada, and operates primarily in Cuba, where it has long-standing mining operations. Sherritt uses hydrometallurgical processing technology to extract and refine metals from lateritic ore deposits, a method that distinguishes it from many conventional mining operations. The company's core business includes nickel and cobalt production, with these metals used in stainless steel manufacturing, battery production and other industrial applications. Sherritt also has interests in oil and gas production and power generation, primarily in Cuba. The company is publicly listed and trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Sherritt's operations in Cuba have been a defining feature of its business model, though they have also exposed the company to geopolitical and regulatory risks, including sanctions-related challenges. The company was founded in 1927 in Alberta, initially as a coal mining operation, before evolving into a diversified natural resources enterprise with a focus on base metals.
