Samancor Chrome

Samancor Chrome is a South African ferrochrome producer and one of the world's largest integrated ferrochrome operations. The company mines chrome ore and smelts it into ferrochrome, a key input for stainless steel production. Samancor Chrome operates several mines in South Africa's chrome-rich Bushveld Complex and runs multiple ferrochrome smelters, including facilities in the country's ferrochrome belt. The business is a joint venture between South32, which holds a 60% stake, and Anglo American, which owns the remaining 40%. Samancor Chrome's operations are energy-intensive, relying heavily on electricity supply from Eskom and private power sources to sustain smelting activities. The company is a significant employer in South Africa's mining and metals sector and a major contributor to the country's ferrochrome export earnings. South Africa accounts for more than 70% of global ferrochrome production, and Samancor Chrome is a cornerstone of that dominance. The venture has faced periodic production curtailments linked to electricity constraints and market volatility. Samancor Chrome was formed through the combination of mining and smelting assets that have been in operation for decades, with ownership structures evolving through corporate restructurings in the South African mining industry.
