Predictive Maintenance

Predictive maintenance is a technology-driven approach that uses data analysis, sensors and monitoring tools to predict when equipment or machinery will require maintenance before a failure occurs. The technique relies on condition-monitoring equipment and real-time data collection to identify patterns and anomalies that indicate potential breakdowns or performance degradation. By analysing factors such as vibration, temperature, pressure, oil quality and acoustic emissions, predictive maintenance systems can forecast when components are likely to fail and schedule interventions accordingly. The approach contrasts with reactive maintenance, which addresses failures after they occur, and preventive maintenance, which follows fixed schedules regardless of actual equipment condition. Industries such as mining, manufacturing, energy and transport have widely adopted predictive maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime, extend asset life spans and optimise maintenance costs. The technology typically integrates Internet of Things sensors, machine learning algorithms and cloud-based analytics platforms to process large volumes of operational data. Advanced implementations may incorporate digital twin models that simulate equipment behaviour under various conditions. Predictive maintenance is a core component of Industry 4.0 strategies, enabling organisations to transition from time-based to condition-based maintenance regimes. The technology delivers measurable returns through improved equipment availability, reduced spare-parts inventories and lower labour costs associated with emergency repairs. Adoption has accelerated as sensor costs have fallen and data analytics capabilities have matured, making the approach accessible to a broader range of operations.
