OR Tambo International Airport

OR Tambo International Airport is South Africa's largest and busiest airport, located in Kempton Park, Gauteng, about 24 km east of Johannesburg's central business district. The facility serves as the primary gateway for international and domestic air travel in South Africa and functions as a major hub for the African continent. It is owned and operated by Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), the State-owned enterprise responsible for managing the country's principal commercial airports. The airport handles the majority of South Africa's international passenger traffic and serves as a hub for South African Airways and other carriers operating across the region. OR Tambo features two terminals and two runways, with capacity to process more than 28-million passengers a year. The airport supports significant cargo operations and plays a central role in trade and logistics for southern Africa. Its infrastructure includes extensive retail, hospitality and business facilities, making it a key economic asset for Gauteng province and the broader national economy. The airport was originally opened in 1952 as Jan Smuts Airport and was renamed in 2006 in honour of Oliver Reginald Tambo, the anti-apartheid activist and former president of the African National Congress.
