Nersa

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa, an independent regulatory authority established in 2004 through the merger of the Electricity Regulator and the Gas Regulator. NERSA is responsible for regulating the electricity, piped gas, and pipeline industries in South Africa, with a mandate to protect consumers, promote competition, and ensure the financial viability of regulated entities. The organisation reports to Parliament and operates under the National Energy Regulator of South Africa Act, 2004. NERSA's key functions include licensing energy generation and distribution facilities, approving tariffs for electricity and gas, investigating complaints, and enforcing compliance with industry regulations. The regulator plays a crucial role in South Africa's energy governance, particularly in overseeing the operations of Eskom and other major energy utilities. NERSA has been at the centre of significant policy debates regarding electricity pricing, renewable energy integration, and the country's transition away from coal-dependent generation. The organisation's decisions on tariff applications and licence approvals directly influence South Africa's energy security, investment climate, and progress towards decarbonisation objectives.
