Livingstone

Livingstone is a city in southern Zambia, situated in Southern Province near the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. It sits close to Victoria Falls, one of the world's largest waterfalls, and serves as a major gateway for tourism in the region. The city was historically Zambia's colonial capital before Lusaka assumed that role, and it retains a legacy of colonial-era architecture and infrastructure. Its economy centres on tourism, hospitality and cross-border trade, supported by an international airport and road links to Zimbabwe and Botswana. Livingstone also functions as a node in regional telecommunications and transport corridors linking southern African countries. It hosts border-crossing facilities that connect Zambia with Zimbabwe over the Zambezi River. The city's proximity to Victoria Falls town makes it strategically important for cross-border infrastructure projects, including fibre-optic and power connections. It is named after the Scottish explorer David Livingstone, who is credited by some historical accounts with being among the first Europeans to document the falls. Population estimates place it among Zambia's mid-sized urban centres, with growth driven by tourism-related development.
