He is a South African economist and central banker with a distinguished career in public finance and monetary policy. Before his appointment as Governor, Kganyago served as Director-General of the National Treasury from 2011 to 2014, where he played a key role in shaping South Africa's fiscal policy during a period of global economic uncertainty. His path to the central bank also included earlier roles at the National Treasury and experience in economic policy formulation. As SARB Governor, Kganyago is responsible for setting monetary policy, maintaining price stability, and overseeing the stability of the financial system. His tenure has coincided with significant challenges including fiscal pressures, currency volatility, and debates over the central bank's role in economic transformation.
