Joburg Water

Joburg Water is a municipal water utility responsible for the distribution and reticulation of potable water to the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. The company is a wholly owned entity of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and operates as one of the city's key service delivery agencies. Joburg Water receives bulk treated water from Rand Water, the regional bulk water supplier, and manages the distribution network that delivers water to residential, commercial and industrial customers across Johannesburg. The utility is responsible for maintaining and upgrading the city's water infrastructure, including reservoirs, pump stations, pipelines and reticulation networks. Joburg Water faces ongoing challenges related to ageing infrastructure, water losses through leaks and illegal connections, and the need for significant capital investment to maintain service levels. The organisation plays a critical role in ensuring water security for South Africa's largest city and economic hub. Like many South African municipalities, Joburg Water has grappled with financial sustainability issues, operational inefficiencies and the need to balance cost recovery with affordable access to water for all residents. The utility's performance is closely watched as an indicator of municipal service delivery capacity in major metropolitan areas. Joburg Water was established as part of the City of Johannesburg's restructuring of service delivery entities following the creation of the unified metropolitan municipality in the early 2000s.
