IEA

The International Energy Agency is an autonomous intergovernmental organisation that provides policy recommendations, analysis and data on the global energy sector. Established in 1974 in the wake of the oil crisis, the agency was initially focused on coordinating responses to oil supply disruptions among industrialised nations. It is headquartered in Paris and operates under the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The agency's membership comprises 31 countries, primarily from Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region, though it also engages with major emerging economies including China and India through association agreements. Its mandate has expanded significantly beyond energy security to encompass the global energy transition, climate policy, clean energy technology deployment and market analysis. The International Energy Agency publishes influential reports including the annual World Energy Outlook, which shapes energy policy and investment decisions worldwide. It maintains extensive databases on energy production, consumption and trade across all major fuel types and technologies, including oil, gas, coal, renewables, nuclear power and emerging sectors such as electric vehicles and batteries. The agency is led by an executive director and governed by a governing board of member-country representatives. Under the leadership of executive director Fatih Birol since 2015, the organisation has placed greater emphasis on the transition to clean energy and achieving net-zero emissions. The International Energy Agency's analysis and policy guidance are widely cited by governments, industry and investors as authoritative references on energy markets and trends.
