Heavy Rare Earths

Heavy rare earths are a subset of rare earth elements characterised by higher atomic numbers and greater atomic mass, typically including terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and yttrium. These elements occupy the latter portion of the lanthanide series on the periodic table, distinguishing them from light rare earths such as lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium and neodymium. Heavy rare earths are critical to advanced technologies, particularly in the manufacture of high-strength permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines and precision electronics. Dysprosium and terbium, for instance, are essential additives that enable neodymium-iron-boron magnets to maintain performance at elevated temperatures. The elements also find application in phosphors for LED lighting, laser systems, fibre optics and medical imaging equipment. Heavy rare earths are significantly scarcer in the Earth's crust than their lighter counterparts and are more difficult and costly to extract and refine. Global supply is heavily concentrated, with the majority of production historically originating from ionic clay deposits in southern China. This concentration has prompted efforts to diversify sources, with exploration and development projects under way in Africa, North America and Australia. The strategic importance of heavy rare earths has led governments and industry to classify them as critical minerals essential to energy transition, defence and technology sectors. Prices for heavy rare earth oxides are typically higher and more volatile than those for light rare earths, reflecting supply constraints and growing demand from green-technology applications.
