Gqeberha

Gqeberha is a major city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, formerly known as Port Elizabeth until its official renaming in 2021. The city serves as a significant economic and industrial hub for the province and the country's automotive manufacturing sector. Gqeberha is situated on the shores of Algoa Bay in the Indian Ocean, making it an important port city with substantial maritime and logistics infrastructure. The metropolitan area has a population of over one-million people, making it one of the largest urban centres in South Africa. The city's economy is anchored by automotive assembly and component manufacturing, with major global manufacturers operating facilities in the region. Gqeberha also plays an increasingly important role in South Africa's renewable energy sector, particularly wind energy, owing to the Eastern Cape's favourable wind resources and the city's established industrial base. The city is home to universities, research institutions and a growing services sector. Its strategic location along the country's southern coast positions it as a gateway for trade and investment in the Eastern Cape. Gqeberha was founded in 1820 as one of South Africa's oldest colonial settlements and has evolved into a diverse industrial and commercial centre.
