Ferrochrome

Ferrochrome is an alloy of chromium and iron, typically containing 50% to 70% chromium by weight, used primarily as a raw material in stainless steel production. The alloy is produced by smelting chromite ore in electric arc furnaces at high temperatures, a process that is highly energy-intensive. Ferrochrome imparts corrosion resistance, hardness and heat resistance to stainless steel, making it an essential input for the global steel industry. South Africa is one of the world's largest producers of ferrochrome, owing to its substantial chromite ore reserves concentrated in the Bushveld Complex. The country accounts for a significant share of global ferrochrome output, with production centred in provinces such as Limpopo and North West. Major producers include integrated mining and smelting operations that supply both domestic and international markets. The ferrochrome industry is a substantial employer and contributor to export earnings in South Africa. Production is capital-intensive and sensitive to electricity costs, with smelters requiring reliable baseload power. Environmental and decarbonisation pressures are driving efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of ferrochrome production, including exploration of renewable energy sources and process improvements. The sector faces ongoing challenges related to energy security, regulatory frameworks and global trade dynamics.
