Education

Education is the sector encompassing the formal and informal transmission of knowledge, skills, values and competencies to learners through teaching, training and research. It spans early childhood development, primary and secondary schooling, technical and vocational training, tertiary institutions and adult learning programmes. The sector plays a foundational role in economic development by building human capital, improving productivity and enabling social mobility. In Africa, education systems face challenges including infrastructure deficits, teacher shortages, funding constraints and uneven access between urban and rural areas. Governments typically oversee public education through dedicated ministries or departments, setting curricula, standards and qualifications frameworks. Private providers, including independent schools, tutoring services and publishers, complement state provision. The sector employs millions of teachers, administrators and support staff across the continent. Education spending represents a significant share of public budgets, with outcomes closely watched as indicators of long-term competitiveness. Investment in education infrastructure, digital learning platforms and teacher development remains a policy priority across African economies. The sector intersects with labour markets, technology adoption and broader socioeconomic transformation agendas.
