Dysprosium

Dysprosium is a rare-earth element with the chemical symbol Dy and atomic number 66, belonging to the heavy rare-earth subgroup of the lanthanide series. It is a silvery-white metal with strong magnetic properties and high thermal neutron absorption capacity. Dysprosium is classified as a critical mineral by many governments owing to supply-chain vulnerabilities and its essential role in advanced technologies. The element is extracted from ion-adsorption clays and hard-rock deposits containing minerals such as xenotime and monazite, with China accounting for the majority of global production. Dysprosium is primarily used as an additive in neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets, where it enhances thermal stability and resistance to demagnetisation at elevated temperatures. This property makes dysprosium-enhanced magnets indispensable in electric vehicle traction motors, wind turbine generators and other high-performance applications operating under demanding thermal conditions. The element also finds use in nuclear control rods, data-storage devices and specialist lighting. Dysprosium commands a significant price premium over light rare earths owing to its relative scarcity and concentration of supply. Demand has grown sharply with the expansion of renewable energy and electric mobility sectors, prompting efforts to develop alternative magnet chemistries and to establish new sources outside China. Dysprosium was discovered in 1886 by French chemist Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, who isolated it from holmium oxide; its name derives from the Greek word dysprositos, meaning 'hard to get', reflecting the difficulty of its separation.
