Digital Twin

A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical asset, system or process that uses real-time data and simulation to mirror its behaviour, performance and condition. The technology creates a dynamic software model that is continuously updated through sensors, Internet of Things devices and other data sources connected to the physical counterpart. Digital twins enable operators to monitor, analyse and optimise the performance of equipment, infrastructure or entire facilities without direct physical intervention. The technology supports predictive maintenance by identifying potential failures before they occur, scenario testing to evaluate the impact of proposed changes, and operational optimisation to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Digital twins are widely adopted across manufacturing, energy, healthcare, urban planning and infrastructure management. In the energy sector, digital twins model power grids, generation plants and distribution networks to enhance reliability, integrate renewable sources and manage complex systems such as microgrids. The technology combines data analytics, machine learning and visualisation tools to provide actionable insights for decision-makers. Digital twin applications have expanded rapidly since the early 2010s, driven by advances in cloud computing, sensor technology and artificial intelligence. The concept originated in aerospace and manufacturing but now spans industries seeking to improve asset performance and operational resilience.
