Department Of Transport

The Department of Transport is a South African national government department responsible for formulating and implementing transport policy, legislation and regulation across all modes of transport. Its mandate encompasses road transport, rail, aviation, maritime and public transport systems, with the aim of ensuring safe, reliable and integrated transport infrastructure and services that support economic growth and social development. The department's jurisdiction covers the entire Republic of South Africa, and it operates under the authority of the Minister of Transport. Key functions include developing national transport plans, regulating transport operators, overseeing road safety initiatives, managing relationships with state-owned transport entities and coordinating infrastructure investment. The department works closely with agencies such as the South African National Roads Agency, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the Road Accident Fund and the Civil Aviation Authority. It is responsible for major infrastructure programmes including national road construction and upgrade projects, rural road development and public transport modernisation. The department also plays a central role in policy debates around road tolling, freight logistics and cross-border transport corridors. It was established following South Africa's transition to democracy in 1994, consolidating transport functions previously fragmented under the apartheid-era administration.
