The Department of Electricity and Energy is a South African government department responsible for overseeing the country's electricity supply and broader energy policy. It was established in 2024 following the separation of energy functions from the former Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, reflecting the government's prioritisation of electricity security and energy transition. The department's mandate includes ensuring reliable electricity supply, coordinating responses to power shortages, overseeing the state-owned utility Eskom, and developing policy frameworks for the energy sector. It plays a central role in addressing South Africa's electricity crisis, including the management and reduction of loadshedding, which has severely affected the economy and daily life. The department is also responsible for advancing the country's energy mix, including renewable energy deployment, grid infrastructure development and energy sector reform. It works closely with Eskom, independent power producers, regulators such as the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, and other government entities to stabilise supply and attract investment. The creation of a dedicated electricity and energy department signals government recognition of energy security as a critical economic and social priority. Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has been a prominent figure associated with electricity and energy coordination in South Africa. The department's work is closely watched by business, industry and civil society as the country seeks to overcome its prolonged power crisis and transition to a more sustainable and reliable energy system.
