Congo-Brazzaville

Congo-Brazzaville is a Central African country officially known as the Republic of the Congo, located on the western coast of the continent. Its capital and largest city is Brazzaville, situated on the Congo River directly across from Kinshasa, capital of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. The country has a population of approximately five-million people and an economy heavily dependent on petroleum extraction, which accounts for the majority of government revenue and export earnings. Other significant sectors include forestry, mining, agriculture and light manufacturing, with iron ore, potash and other minerals representing areas of potential development. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, shared with five other members of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa. Congo-Brazzaville operates as a presidential republic and is a member of the African Union, the Economic Community of Central African States and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Major oil production occurs offshore in the Atlantic and in the southern Pointe-Noire region, while the country's northern forests contain valuable timber resources. The nation gained independence from France in 1960 and experienced periods of socialist governance and civil conflict before transitioning to a market-oriented economy in the 1990s. Infrastructure development, including transport links and power generation, remains a priority for economic diversification and industrial growth.
