Bushveld Complex

The Bushveld Complex is a vast layered igneous intrusion located in South Africa, spanning portions of North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces. It is the world's largest known layered igneous complex, covering an area of approximately 66 000 km² and extending roughly 450 km in length. The complex was formed around two billion years ago through the slow cooling and crystallisation of magma, which created distinct mineral-rich layers. It contains the world's largest reserves of platinum-group metals (PGMs), including platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium, accounting for more than 75% of global platinum reserves and production. The Bushveld Complex also hosts significant deposits of chromium, vanadium, titanium, iron ore and other minerals, making it one of the most economically important geological formations on Earth. Major mining operations by companies including Northam Platinum, Glencore and Eastern Platinum extract PGMs and other minerals from the complex, particularly in the western and eastern limbs. The region supports thousands of mining jobs and underpins a substantial portion of South Africa's mineral exports and foreign-exchange earnings. Towns such as Brits, Rustenburg and Steelpoort have developed around the mining industry supported by the complex. The Bushveld Complex remains central to South Africa's mining sector and to global supply chains for platinum-group metals used in automotive catalytic converters, electronics and industrial applications.
