Breathalysers

A breathalyser is a portable electronic device used to measure the concentration of alcohol in a person's breath, providing a rapid and non-invasive method of detecting alcohol impairment. The device works by analyzing a breath sample and converting the results into a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reading, which can be compared against legal or occupational safety thresholds. Breathalysers are widely used in law enforcement for roadside testing of drivers suspected of driving under the influence, and in occupational health and safety contexts for workplace screening. In South Africa, breathalysers have become standard equipment in occupational health and safety programs, particularly in the transportation and logistics sectors where driver safety is paramount. The technology is valued for its speed, accuracy, and ease of use, allowing organizations to conduct rapid screening of multiple workers. ALCO-Safe and similar organizations utilize breathalysers as a core component of their alcohol screening programs, enabling the implementation of compulsory daily screening protocols for drivers in e-commerce logistics and last-mile delivery operations. Breathalysers provide objective, quantifiable data that helps organizations ensure drivers are fit for duty and comply with safety regulations.
