Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth, encompassing the diversity of species, genetic variation within species and the range of ecosystems in which they exist. It includes all living organisms, from microorganisms and fungi to plants, animals and the complex ecological communities they form. The concept is fundamental to understanding ecosystem health, resilience and the provision of services such as pollination, water purification, climate regulation and food production. High biodiversity typically indicates robust ecosystems capable of withstanding environmental stresses, while biodiversity loss can signal ecosystem degradation and reduced capacity to support human and natural systems. Conservation of biodiversity is a global priority, reflected in international agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and national strategies aimed at protecting threatened species and habitats. In Africa, biodiversity is particularly rich, with the continent hosting diverse biomes ranging from tropical rainforests and savannahs to deserts and coastal marine environments. Economic sectors including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism and pharmaceuticals depend directly on biodiversity, making its preservation both an environmental and economic imperative. Threats to biodiversity include habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, invasive species and overexploitation of natural resources. Governments, research institutions and conservation bodies work to monitor biodiversity, establish protected areas and promote sustainable land and resource management practices. The field has gained increasing attention in business and policy circles as the links between biodiversity, ecosystem services and economic stability become better understood.
