AU Agenda 2063

AU Agenda 2063 (African Union Agenda 2063) is the African Union's strategic framework for the socioeconomic transformation of the continent over a fifty-year period from 2013 to 2063. Adopted by the AU Assembly in 2013, the agenda sets out a vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena. The framework is structured around seven aspirations, including a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development, an integrated continent with seamless borders, good governance anchored in democracy and human rights, a peaceful and secure Africa, and a strong cultural identity and common heritage. Agenda 2063 is implemented through successive ten-year implementation plans, with the first covering 2014 to 2023 and focusing on goals such as infrastructure development, industrialisation, agricultural modernisation and the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area. The agenda emphasises African ownership and financing, aiming to reduce dependency on external aid and to mobilise domestic resources for development. Key flagship projects include the Grand Inga Dam, the African Integrated High-Speed Railway Network, the establishment of a single African air transport market and the creation of continental financial institutions. Agenda 2063 represents a long-term commitment to Pan-African unity and self-reliance, building on the legacy of the Organisation of African Unity and positioning the continent to compete globally in the twenty-first century. Progress is monitored through a results framework with targets and indicators tracked at national, regional and continental levels.
