Articulated Dump Trucks

Articulated dump trucks are heavy-duty off-road vehicles designed to transport bulk materials across rough terrain in mining, quarrying and large-scale construction operations. The defining feature is an articulated chassis that pivots at a central hinge point between the front cab section and the rear dump body, allowing the truck to flex and maintain traction on uneven ground while carrying loads typically ranging from 25 tonnes to more than 50 tonnes. This articulation provides superior manoeuvrability and stability compared with rigid-frame dump trucks, making them particularly suited to soft, muddy or steep sites where conventional haul trucks would struggle. The rear body tilts hydraulically to discharge material, and the vehicles are powered by high-torque diesel engines with all-wheel drive and differential locks to maximise traction. Articulated dump trucks are widely used in open-pit mining, aggregate extraction and civil earthworks, where they shuttle ore, overburden, rock and soil between loading points and processing or stockpile areas. Major manufacturers include Volvo, Caterpillar, Bell Equipment, Komatsu and John Deere, with models offered in a range of payload capacities to suit different operational scales. The technology has evolved to incorporate advanced features such as collision avoidance systems, proximity detection, telematics for fleet management and, increasingly, autonomous or semi-autonomous operation to improve safety and productivity. Fuel efficiency has also become a focus, with some operators trialling alternative fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil to reduce emissions. Articulated dump trucks remain a cornerstone of bulk material handling in resource extraction and heavy construction worldwide.
