Antimony

Antimony is a silvery-white metalloid element used primarily in flame retardants, lead-acid batteries and various alloys. The element, with chemical symbol Sb and atomic number 51, occurs naturally in the earth's crust, most commonly as the sulphide mineral stibnite. Antimony compounds are added to textiles, plastics and coatings to reduce flammability, accounting for more than half of global consumption. The metal is also alloyed with lead to harden battery grids and improve their performance in automotive and industrial applications. Other uses include semiconductors, ceramics, glass manufacturing and as a catalyst in the production of polyethylene terephthalate plastics. China dominates global antimony production, supplying about 60% of mined output, with significant deposits also found in Russia, Tajikistan, Bolivia and South Africa. The metal is typically extracted through roasting of stibnite ore followed by reduction with carbon, or through direct smelting processes. Antimony is considered a critical mineral by several governments owing to supply concentration risks and its importance in defence, electronics and energy storage applications. Prices are volatile and sensitive to Chinese export policy and environmental regulation. The element has been known since ancient times, used in cosmetics and medicine by early civilisations, though large-scale industrial use began only in the twentieth century with the development of flame-retardant applications.
