Air Quality

Air quality refers to the condition of the atmosphere as measured by the concentration of pollutants such as particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone and carbon monoxide. It is monitored to assess the suitability of ambient air for human health, ecosystems and infrastructure. Poor air quality typically results from industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, biomass burning, mining activity and power generation, particularly from coal-fired plants. Monitoring relies on ground-based sensor networks as well as satellite-based earth observation, which allows for regional and continental-scale tracking of pollutants and their dispersion. In sub-Saharan Africa, air quality management is an emerging regulatory and public-health priority, with agencies increasingly using satellite data to supplement limited ground infrastructure. Poor air quality is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular disease, contributing significantly to the socioeconomic burden of illness in affected regions. It also has climate change implications, since many air pollutants are linked to greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate forcers. Governments and regional bodies use air quality data to inform environmental-impact assessments, urban planning and industrial licensing. Improved monitoring capacity, including through space agencies and earth observation programmes, is seen as key to strengthening compliance with air quality standards and informing climate adaptation strategies. The topic recurs in coverage of environmental regulation, energy transition and technology deployment across the African continent.
