Accra

Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana, located on the country's Atlantic coast in the Greater Accra Region. With a metropolitan population of approximately 4.5 million people, it serves as Ghana's administrative, economic and cultural centre. The city is the hub of the country's commercial activity, hosting the headquarters of major banks, multinational corporations and government institutions. Accra's economy is driven by services, finance, manufacturing, information technology and a growing tech startup sector. The city is home to Kotoka International Airport, which serves as a major regional aviation hub connecting West Africa to international destinations. Key infrastructure includes the Port of Tema, located about 25 kilometres east of the city centre, which handles the majority of Ghana's seaborne trade. Accra's strategic position has made it an important gateway for business and investment in West Africa, particularly in the mining, oil and gas sectors. The city has experienced rapid urbanisation and economic growth since Ghana's independence in 1957, evolving from a colonial administrative centre into a modern African metropolis. Accra hosts regional offices of international organisations and serves as a diplomatic hub, with numerous embassies and high commissions. The city's Jubilee House serves as the seat of government and the official residence and office of the President of Ghana.
