How to manage the total cost of owning mining equipment and the advantages of using gas-powered generators at mine sites are two of the key discussion points that engine, power generation and related components manufacturer Cummins will highlight at the 2015 Investing in African Mining Indaba, says strategic marketing and corporate communications director for Africa Alexis Telfer.

She tells Mining Weekly that the company will host two guest speakers for the first time since it has taken part in the event, which will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from February 9 to 12.

“Combined with our local knowledge of African business, our long history in the global mining industry, uniquely positions us to speak about these topics,” says Telfer.

She says Cummins decided to be part of this year’s event as it presents an opportunity for the company to showcase its products and services for key decision- makers – especially since Cummins has invested in mining segments across Africa through its global relationships with mining equipment manufacturers and its extensive aftermarket service and support network.

Telfer adds that the company’s stand, speaker sessions and networking arrangements will all dovetail with one overarching theme: “Dependable Partnerships”, as Cummins’ mining strategy is anchored in developing and promoting such relationships.

Relevant to Industry
Telfer highlights the Investing in African Mining Indaba as “the single-largest event” showcasing mining capabilities and opportunities on the continent. She adds that the event attracts a broad range of professionals who are engaged in the development of mining interests and investments in Africa.

“It is unparalleled as a forum for thought leadership and networking,” she says, adding that Cummins is looking forward to hearing from investment-minded mining leaders, as the company will use new information to better position itself in developing and maintaining sustainable mining operations in Africa.

Telfer notes that the Mining Indaba attracts professionals from diverse sectors who gather to share their knowledge on different subjects, including creating and maintaining shareholder value, understanding commodities and the markets that support them, public and private interests, and Africa’s future in mining.

She tells Mining Weekly that visitors to Cummins’ stand will have the opportunity to view products, enjoy the company’s multimedia products and services displays and interact with senior staff members. Visitors will also receive brochures and examples of business cases, to familiarise themselves with the company’s products and services.

In addition to members of the Cummins Africa leadership team, business unit and product line leaders will also attend the event. “We realise the significance of the Mining Indaba on our annual events calendar, which is why we aim to ensure that visitors to our stand enjoy our hospitality, while receiving all the information and attention they expect.”

Telfer says attending speaker sessions, making connections through the Mining Indaba networking programme and supporting its customers’ exhibitions are some other aspects that the company is looking forward to at the event.
