Operations at West African gold producer Avesoro Resources’ Youga gold mine, in Burkina Faso, have restarted after a week-long suspension.

This followed the conclusion of negotiations between proposed openpit mining contractor Orkun Group Sarl and former employees of the company’s openpit mining department.

Mining operations restarted on June 15, followed by processing operations on June 16, says Avesoro CEO Serhan Umurhan.

Earlier in June, operations were temporarily suspended to allow for discussions around the rehiring of the openpit operators, who had downed tools on June 7.

Umurhan says Avesoro has embarked on a comprehensive cost review, implementing an initiative to transition both Youga and New Liberty to contractor mining to further reduce the mining cost at both mines, while increasing mining volumes.

“As part of this initiative and a drive to reduce costs in general, the Burkinabe employee headcount has been reduced by about 300 employees, most of whom were employed within the mining department,” the company said.

“My ongoing focus remains to minimise the impact of the temporary production stoppage at Youga, while successfully delivering the remaining transition to contractor mining operations at both Youga and New Liberty,” Umurhan continues.

When

processing operations were suspended, the company’s engineering team completed various scheduled electrical and mechanical maintenance tasks in and around the process plant.

It also continues to assess a number of project optimisation options, including ore sorting and heap-leach scenarios at both New Liberty and Youga to further improve the economics of both projects.
