Yancoal takes over Middlemount mining
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - ASX-listed Yancoal would take over operations at the Middlemount coal joint venture (JV), after reaching an agreement with mining services provider NRW Holdings.
Yancoal said in a statement on Thursday that it would restructure the current mining services contract with NRW into a dry hire contract.
The company said that as both Yancoal and its JV partner Peabody Energy were coal mine operators, it was a logical step for the Middlemount JV to be owner-operated.
The transition would start on February 23 and was expected to be completed by mid-2013.
NRW said that all current waged personnel employed to work at the Middlemount mine would be transferred to the JV vehicle, while NRW staff would be invited to apply for roles with the JV.
The Middlemount operation had the capacity to produce some 3.8-million tons a year of saleable production from a reserve of 96-million tons and a resource base of 123-million tons.
