PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Australian oil and gas major Woodside has officially backed a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) development for its three Browse gas fields.

In April this year, the miner abandoned a A$45-billion onshore development for the Browse project, saying that it was no longer commercially viable. Simultaneously, the ASX-listed Woodside noted that it was considering project partner Shell’s FLNG technology to develop the project.

CEO Peter Coleman said on Tuesday that Woodside’s final decision on a FLNG development for Browse followed the evaluation of alternative development concepts after the company decided not to proceed with an onshore development.

These development options included a pipeline to existing facilities in the Pilbara and a modified option in the Kimberley.

“Through this review, a compelling case has emerged for floating LNG as the best option for early commercialisation of the world-class Browse resource,” Coleman said.

The Supreme Court this week overturned the state government’s environmental approval for the onshore development of the Browse LNG hub, saying the Environmental Minister had erred in granting it.

The three Browse gasfields are estimated to contain a combined contingent resource of about 13.3-trillion cubic feet of dry gas and 360-million barrels of concentrate. First gas production has initially been slated for 2017.
